We’re rarely mindful of breathing which is not bad as our body does it on its own. But when we’re stressed or feeling overwhelmed, we get in the way of the breathing apparatus. We breathe shallow from the shoulders up and we don’t inhale deeply.
Next time you begin to feel yourself go into your head and out of your body because of some trigger, simply focus first on your breathing. Become aware of your diaphragm and how it moves downward, pulling the ribs up and outward. Feel your lungs fill with air. Inhale slowly, counting to 6. Exhale slowly, counting to 6. Do this 6 times. Your shoulders shouldn’t move. Notice how your energy drops into your body as you begin to feel more calm and relaxed. Observe how something that seemed like a problem is not nearly so dramatic.
