One of the things I help clients with is self-awareness. Self-awareness is the foundation for growth, happiness and success. It’s the process of understanding yourself and the ability to tell yourself the truth.
We are always operating in some sort of mood or emotional space. Our behavior has a kind of emotional tone to it. This emotional ‘mood state’ dictates our actions and behavior. The more self-aware we are, the more we have the power to change it. The first step is to understand what is going on.
We have a choice and you can think of it as the ‘line of choice’ between living above or below the line. Above the line, we take 100% responsibility. It’s a simple yet powerful belief that we create what happens to us. Think of it as ‘by me’. When we’re above the line, we are in a space of trust. We trust ourselves, we trust the environment. We’re open and curious and we’re really interested in learning.
When we are below the line, we are actually in a threatened state. We believe that someone or something out there is a threat to us then we go below the line and we become closed and defensive and we get really committed to proving that we’re right. This is ‘to me’ thinking. Common traits of below the line thinking are; blame games, problems, justification and denial.
At any given moment, we are either above or below the line. This is not a stage but a state of consciousness. It’s not good or bad, it just is. Can you locate where you are? Is this serving you for what you want to achieve?
In the next post, I will talk about why this is important and how you can make the shift from below to above the line.
